The World's Colored Champions Philadelphia Giants, 1904-1910


In the first decade of the 20th Century, a Philadelphia team dominated African-American baseball, claiming the title of World's Colored Champions from1904-1910.

The team included such Hall of Famers as Sol White, Rube Foster, Pete Hill, Frank Grant and John Henry "Pop"Lloyd.

Who Were the Dolly Vardens of Philadelphia?

While searing the Internet and browsing through social media to find topics to highlight during African-American History Month, I came across a tweet claiming that the Philadelphia Dolly Vardens, a team of all African-American women, became the first professional baseball team in 1867, a full two years before the formation of the Cincinnati Red Stockings.   Intrigued, but also skeptical, I wanted to find out more about the Dolly Vardens. The first thing I noticed is that the statement that the Dolly Vardens were the first professional baseball team, or the first team to be paid to play baseball, is repeated on numerous websites, tweets, and Instagram posts without any citation or reference to an original source.   One Facebook page, entitled “The Dolly Varden Project,” even posts a photo of an all-female African-American team claiming it to be of the Dolly Vardens.   Further research, however, reveals the photo to be of a team organized by a YMCA in the 1920s. ...

Caught Between Leagues: The Tragic Death of Ed Delahanty

Kovatch, Jr.             On July 9, 1903, the naked, mangled body of a man with his leg shorn off was fished out of the Niagara Gorge, downstream from Niagara Falls.   The body was identified as Ed Delahanty, outfielder for the Washington Senators and former offensive powerhouse for the Philadelphia Phillies.   Delahanty had last been seen on July 2, when a train conductor, John Cole, fed up with Delahanty’s drunken misconduct, threw him off of the train before crossing the International Railway Bridge.   A New York Times obituary reported that Delahanty had an open razor and was terrorizing passengers in a sleeper compartment.   Delahanty had been drinking too excess, and became confused and irate when he tried to enter a sleeper compartment that was already occupied.   Cole failed to follow proper procedures and simply left Delahanty at the Bridgeburg station, instead of leaving Delahanty...

The 1993 Philles: Behind the Baseball

In the summer of 1993, the Philadelphia Phillies seemed invincible to many in the baseball world. But all of that came to a screeching halt one night in October. And no, I’m not talking about the infamous home run no Phillies fan should be forced to rewatch. The fact is, Joe Carter’s walk-off home run was a foregone conclusion; a moment sealed in fate by events that unfolded just days earlier. It was October 20, 1993.  The Phillies appeared to have game 4 of the World Series sewn up with a five run lead going into the late innings. A Phillies win would have tied up the series at 2, with one game left in Philadelphia, and potentially 2 more in Toronto.
